Common Mistakes at the Gym

Women Working Out Going to the gym can be a daunting experience, especially for guys, and I often see newcomers making mistakes that could have been avoided had they seeked some proper advice. Saying that, I also believe that personal trainers are often too expensive for what you're getting but sometimes it's unavoidable to ensure that you don't end up injuring yourself. Look out for some of these common mistakes and make sure that you're not making them.

1. Not making improvements
At the beginning, everything seems tough because you're not used to the exercise, but once you get stronger then it gets easier. A lot of the time, people just stay at lifting the same weight for weeks, months and sometimes even years. This isn't going to build muscle or help you to lose weight. You need to constantly change your routine so that your body is forced to respond.

2. Lifting too much
I often see people lifting too much and I've even had friends that start going to the gym and trying to lift the same weight as the rest of the group to save face. At times like these, I have to step in and tell them not to lift so much or they'll injure themselves. Each exercise you do when lifting weights has a technique and a specific muscle group that you are targetting. Although there are method to 'cheat' safely to lift more, in general, you have to make sure that you aren't sacrificing form to lift heavier, 'cause all this means is that you are using the wrong muscles to support your movement.

3. Not lifting enough
Many beginners at the gym, don't know how much to lift but for fear of embarrassment Gymjust end up doing very light weights. Most people I see at the gym can probably lift more than they think and this was a mistake that I made early on. For example, I was bench pressing a max of 50kg when I first started and when I found a more experienced friend he forced me to lift more while he spotted (this means that I couldn't hurt myself with him assisting). Within 3 months I was up to a max of 100kg and most of what was limiting me before was more psychological than physical.

4. Trying to spot reduce
I've seen many people doing hundreds of crunches and sit-ups trying to get that coveted six pack or flat stomach, without realizing that their abs are covered by a layer of fat. To get that six pack, you need to do a combination of aerobic exercise, strength training and eating the right diet. You really have to burn off the fat around your stomach before those abs show through and you have to burn fat all over, not just in one place. That's just the way it works!

5. Bad Diets
What should your diet be? If you want to gain weight and muscle, eat more. If you want to lost weight, eat less. In both cases, eat more healthy and eat more frequently (in smaller portions). You should be eating 6 meals a day and each meal should be tailored to suit your body type. I won't go into dieting too much here because there's a huge amount of information about this on the web and believe me, I'm no expert of nutrition and dieting!

Hopefully, this article has helped to let you know what not to do at the gym and if you don't want to spend a fortune on personal training, try getting advice from experienced friends. Just make sure that you're not going to hurt yourself and that you're having fun!!
